Mary Mertz has a book on the Graceland Cemetery of Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa which includes a listing for:
"Catherine Sells McLaughlin, born 2 Nov. 1838; died 22 February 1909 in DesMoines, Polk County, Iowa; wife of Angus McLaughlin, 1837-1914." This listing has with it the following note: "City burial permit for Angus McLaughlin, died 28 May 1914, Lowden, age 76 years, 9 months, 20 days."
In the 1880 Census, this family is listed in Fremont, Hamilton County, Iowa; page 185D: "Angus McLaughlin, age 42, born Ohio, farmer, both parents born Scotland; wife Catherine, age 41, born Ohio, both parents born Ohio; daughter Elizabeth A. McLaughlin, age 15, born Iowa, at school; son Joseph A. McLaughlin, age 14, born Iowa, works on farm; son Angus A. McLaughlin, age 12, born Iowa, at school; son Edwin S. McLaughlin, age 10, born Iowa, at school; son Marion W. McLaughlin, age 8, born Iowa, at school; daughter Maud W. McLaughlin, age 6, born Iowa; mother Eliza McLaughlin, widow, age 70, born Scotland, both parents born Scotland; and "other" John Hanson, single, age 26, laborer, born Denmark; and "other" Rosie Hansen, single, age 35, born Norway, domestic."
Questions:
Who were the parents of Catherine Sells McLaughlin, 1838-1909?
Where were Catheirne and Angus McLaughlin married? Ohio? Iowa? Or some place in-between?
Was Elizabeth their first child? If so, were they married about 1864?
Possible Ties?
The only Sell(s) McLaughlin marriage I have records of, is that of a "Hiram Sell who married on 12 February 1867 in Richland County, Ohio to Elizabeth A. McLaughlin."
We believe that this Hiram Sell is a son of Levi and Catharine Miller Sell (see Celle CD #2, History Volume 5, page 87). Levi and Catharine Sell did have a daughter named Catherine, but she is listed as age 1 year in 1850, so is NOT likely the Catherine Sells McLaughlin born in 1838.
I also know about another Elizabeth McLaughlin who married about 1845 in either Maryland or Franklin County, PA to a Jeremiah Miller. Are they somehow related?
Levi Sell was a son of Henry and Catherine Jackson Sell(s); and a grandson of Leonard and Elizabeth Stoner Sell/Cell/Zell; who were also from Franklin County, PA.
